Food is confusing.

We have a love/hate relationship with it for sure.  We need it to nourish our bodies and give us energy.  We love it because it tastes delicious.  We hate it because sometimes it causes us pain or discomfort, and often, unwanted weight gain.

It’s not your fault!

The food industry makes it so hard to know which foods are good for you and which aren’t.

One day eggs are bad for us, increasing our cholesterol and putting us at risk for heart disease.  We are told to eat egg whites and throw those yolks away.  But then all of a sudden the science changes and now we are told that that was a mistake!  Go ahead and eat those eggs!  As a matter of fact, eat lots of them because they are an excellent protein source! 

What about grains? According to the Food Guide Pyramid we should be eating  6-11 servings/day. Wait a minute, that’s not right!  Today we learn more about the creation of the food guide pyramid and that is was all an untruth, created by the Dept of Agriculture to help them to increase sales of grain!

We have been told to eat low fat, low cholesterol, heart healthy…  and now people are putting butter and coconut oil in their coffee!!

What do we believe and how do we know what is right?   

What should we do?

The answer is simple:  Eat real, Whole Foods.

The problem is huge:  We are bombarded every day by the food industry selling their product.  We are constantly being marketing to by a huge industry.  Walk down the aisles of the grocery store, turn on the tv,  open any social media outlet and you are being sold to.  Often you are being sold “health”.  Those health claims on the bags and boxes are not what they seem (and quite honestly deserve a post of their own).

We are also being sold convenience.   We live in a very busy world.  Taking time to meal plan and prep and taking time out of cook is often not an option for many.  And so it becomes easier to buy the already made meal, drive through the fast food drive through on the way home from work or on the way to the soccer game.

Yes, the answer is simple.  But it’s not easy.

The truth.

There is no miracle pill to health and weight loss. That skinny shake you see on TV isn’t going to magically blast that fat you are trying to lose. It takes time and effort.  It takes making a conscious decision day after day to make healthier choices for you and your family.  It takes commitment.

But, in the end, it is worth all of it. One thing we have come to realize is that accountability and consistency are the keys to achieving lasting results. Find a group of others who are working toward the same goals, dealing with the same struggles and finding ways to live their best lives in a healthier way.
