Wait… what? Aren’t you ladies supposed to be telling us to stay away from all of the candy and desserts and cake over the holiday season?

Isn’t that the stuff that we are trying to replace in our diets? What the heck are you talking about?

Yep… We spend lots of time telling you that you are to be building your diet around those foods which feed your body, not just fill your belly. We have been stressing the importance of eating tons of fresh fruits and vegetables, the importance of high quality protein, eating foods with no labels, portion control… all of that. And we meant it. Every single word of it.

However, if you listened really closely you would also know that we have also been telling you that we are all human. We all have some favorite foods or desserts that may not always fit into our healthy eating regime. And that the reasons that we eat are not always based on pure nutrition. If it was, we would all be eating veggies and fruits at every single meal and be perfectly content and happy, right?

The truth is this. Refresh Your Plate isn’t all about eating good foods and avoiding all the “bad” foods. Refresh Your Plate is about loving your body and respecting it. It’s about fitting holidays and birthdays into your lifestyle. It is about choosing foods that help to build you up. It’s about celebrating life events with a really good meal, or even a treat.

Every time you choose one food over another, you are deciding what is the most important to you at that moment. So what matters to you right this minute? Is it feeling good, remembering your family traditions, surviving a crazy holiday get together, enjoying moments with your kids?

Sometimes things like joy and pleasure win over nutrition. And that is a good thing. We need to keep the holidays real, we need to keep them fun and enjoyable. And fun and enjoyment often comes with a yummy treat!

Our suggestion to you:

Enjoy the treat on Easter, or any other holiday for that matter. Eat the ears off the bunny or enjoy a piece of cake. Slow down, enjoy the moment, spend the quality time with your loved ones. Make it an event and enjoy every single bite. And then, move on. Don’t stay there. Don’t make it an Easter week or a birthday month. Make it a day, or a meal. Tomorrow we are right back at it, making the healthy choices daily that help us to fuel our bodies to become the healthiest they can be.

Because it’s not about what we do occasionally. It’s about our daily actions and choices.
