Those words can either be the best thing you’ve heard, or your worst nightmare.

You’ve worked so hard on making your diet healthy and are doing so well. Then, someone asks if you want to “grab something to eat”. Innocent enough, right?

One of the hardest things to do when you are trying to eat healthy is eating out at a restaurant. It’s one thing to say “well , I just won’t eat out”, but it’s pretty unrealistic to think that you honestly will be dining in your kitchen or dining room for the rest of your life, every single meal. Remember, at Refresh Your Plate we are about building a lifestyle, not a diet, right? And eating out, well, it’s just fun!

Maybe your restaurant choices won’t be as healthy as what you can make at home, but there is no reason to say no to those moments. Times spent celebrating and spending time with friends and family most often include a meal. Here are some tips to help you when you are navigating through the menu:

1. Do a quick scan on the menu!

There are definitely things to steer clear of when looking at the menu. Avoid menu items with the words:

  • fried
  • crispy
  • scalloped
  • creamed or creamy
  • alfredo
  • breaded

Here are some things to look for:

  • grilled
  • baked
  • steamed
  • seared
  • broiled
  • roasted

2. Eat Protein:

Protein is an important part of your meal. Pick wisely. Pick lean cuts of meat, chicken and fish ( Remember, not fried)

3. Ask for double the veggies!

Yes! DOUBLE VEGGIES! Just be sure that those veggies aren’t drowning in butter or a creamy sauce! FYI: Potatoes are not considered a veggie!

4. Ask about how it’s prepared!

Don’t be afraid to ask about the preparation and also to ask for what you want. Most restaurants are happy to help make your meal enjoyable and will make your meal however you ask for it. In all honesty, if they aren’t willing to accommodate you, you most likely shouldn’t be eating there in the first place.

5. Ask for a box and take home half your meal before you even start eating!

Most often restaurants serve you huge portions, much more than you would normally eat. Be mindful of them and take note right away. If you get your meal and it’s way larger than you would normally eat, be proactive! Ask for a box before you start eating, pack half of it up and then eat the rest! Then you have an already made lunch for tomorrow.

6. Alcohol? Skip it if you can.

But if you must, here are the better choices for drinks:

  • Wine,
  • vodka tonic,
  • a simple mixed drink without the simple syrup
  • a lite beer.

7. Drink water!

This pretty much goes without saying. Keep hydrated throughout your meal.

There is no reason to avoid those restaurant meals on occasion. You just need to go armed with a pocket full of tips and tricks to make your meal the healthiest version it can be!
